MUSCAT: The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources (MRMWR), as part of its efforts to enhance the water wealth and develop its resources, is maintaining and rehabilitating the aflaj in the various wilayats, based on the great care given by the ministry to preserve this cultural heritage and its unique engineering system through the maintenance of aflaj and the drilling of auxiliary wells. In 2017, about 145 aflaj were maintained and rehabilitated as follows: Muscat Governorate — 8, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate — 16, North Al Sharqiyah Governorate — 19, South Al Sharqiyah Governorate — 16, South Al Batinah Governorate — 40, North Al Batinah Governorate — 11, Al Dhahirah Governorate — 12, Al Buraimi Governorate — 10, Musandam Governorate — 9, and 4 water springs in Dhofar Governorate. The Ministry is proceeding in accordance with a consistent approach and a clear vision in preserving the Omani aflaj through the maintenance works carried out throughout the year, taking into account the priority of the structural affected aflaj with low water situation.
